    WHAT IS PTA?

PTA is a national organization of volunteers whose primary concern is the well being of children and youth.  Stated objectives of the organization are:

    • To promote the welfare of children and youth in home, school, community and place of worship.

    • To raise the standards of home life.

    • To secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth.

    • To bring into closer relation the home and the school, that parents and teachers may cooperate intelligently in the education of children and youth.

    • To develop between educators and the general public such united efforts as will secure for all children and youth the highest advantages in physical, mental, social and spiritual education.

The La Mesa-Spring Valley School District has chosen to affiliate with the national organization, Parent Teacher Association (PTA).  All schools in the district have PTA units.  Our unit belongs to the Mt. Helix Council, made up of the  18 elementary and four middle school PTAs within the district.  As a local PTA unit, the Highlands Elementary PTA fits into the national picture through an organizational network.  Mt. Helix Council is part of the Ninth District, made up of all of the councils of San Diego and Imperial Counties.  Our district is one of 30 statewide that compose the California State PTA.  The California State PTA, headquartered in Sacramento, is composed of more than 3000 units.

Why should I become involved in the PTA?

    • To find out what’s happening. The PTA knows what’s happening with the school and usually plans many of the events.

    • To use your skills. You can share what you’re good at doing to help your child and all the other children in the school.

    • To meet other parents. You can learn so much from other PTA members and potentially even make new friends. This is your chance to share ideas, concerns and experiences – a chance you might not have otherwise.

    • To speak up. PTA has a platform you can use to suggest change at your child’s school.

    • To witness improvement. When you get involved, you can help make positive changes to the building, the curriculum and to social events.

    • To show your child you care. By becoming a PTA member, you’re also becoming a role model and demonstrating to your child the importance you place on education.

    • To make a difference. There is power in numbers, so joining PTA gives you a powerful voice for the children.

    • To support your child and others. According to www.pta.org, PTA is the largest child advocacy association in the United States.
