Two Sessions—February 16 and 20, 2018
In a continuing effort to promote transparency and open communication, I am pleased to provide this update regarding the last two bargaining sessions with the La Mesa-Spring Valley Teachers’ Association.
I believe that sharing accurate and timely details about bargaining keeps everyone well-informed and up-to-date, promoting a transparent and open process anchored in good faith.
February 16, 2018, Session
The teams met from approximately 9:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. The purpose of the session was to update the current collective bargaining agreement to include previously ratified and approved language terms. The teams also reviewed various side letters and memoranda of understanding to determine whether such documents should continue to be included in the collective bargaining agreement. The teams completed their review process and once finalized, the most up-to-date collective bargaining agreement will be printed and available online.
In light of last week’s tragedy in Florida, the teams discussed school safety. Both teams shared their commitment to addressing these issues to protect students, employees, and the community. The District team provided an update on efforts underway to train Health and Safety committee members and all employees, and to restock emergency supplies in our classrooms.
February 20, 2018, Session
This past Tuesday, the District and Association teams met again from approximately 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. The teams reached an agreement on changes to Article 21, Professional Learning Communities (“PLCs”). The amendments reaffirm the District’s and Association’s shared commitment to PLCs.
The teams also addressed Specialized Academic Instruction (SAI); combination classes at smaller schools vs. larger schools; and current and additional support provided to combination class teachers. Data will be gathered related to these issues and negotiations will continue at future sessions.
Next Date
The teams will meet again on March 7, 2018.
Until next time,
Tina Sardina
