Murdock school offers a variety of enriching programs that enhance student learning before, during, and after the school day.Although the state budget crisis has caused these programs to be cut throughout the state, we were able to maintain them because of private donations, PTA fundraisers, grants, and volunteer support.Murdock school and PTA thanks everyone who helps in the classroom and who supports PTA fundraisers in order to provide a diverse offering of learning experiences for all students at Murdock.ARTS PROGRAMS AT MURDOCKMUSIC PROGRAM (Grades K-6)Funded through the PTA Exercise 4 Education (E4E) and Spring Fling fundraisers, Murdock is offering a year-long music program for students grades K through 6. Once a week, students receive 30 minutes of music instruction based on California education standards. We are planning a musical performance so that families can hear what the students have learned this year. Watch the school calendar for the performance date. Murdock school is proud to be one of the elementary schools in the La Mesa – Spring Valley School District to offer an instrumental music program to fifth and sixth graders this year. Students elect to enroll in the program which is taught at Murdock once a week by Mr. James Villegas, Director of Music at Spring Valley Middle School. Students participating in the band program and are either learning how to play an instrument for the first time or are learning how to play their instrument in a band setting for the first time. Watch the school calendar for performance dates when the Murdock band will join the other elementary school bands to perform at the annual spring band concert at Spring Valley Middle School.ART DOCENT PROGRAMThis PTA-funded and volunteer-powered program benefits all students at Murdock. Volunteers work in conjunction with classroom teachers to present monthly art lessons and projects which encourage students to explore different media, artists, and perspectives. Sponsored by National PTA and offered at schools through their school's PTA, the Reflections program offers students an opportunity to submit entries inspired by a theme.FITNESS PROGRAMS AT MURDOCKRUN 4 FUN PROGRAMThis PTA-sponsored and volunteer-powered program is offered to all students Monday through Friday between 7:45am and 8:20am (8:05 for Kinders) on the lower field. To learn more about this PTA-sponsored program, please click here.LITERACY PROGRAMS AT MURDOCKACCELERATED READERMurdock students in grades 2-6 each have an opportunity to take reading comprehension quizzes through the web-based Accelerated Reader program. This reinforces their reading comprehension skills and is a fun and effective way for parents, teachers, and students to monitor a student's reading progress. The subscription to more than 300,000 quizzes is paid for through PTA fundraisers. Each student is encouraged to bring books they no longer read. At the book swap, students can select an equal number of books to take home.
