Welcome to Sweetwater Springs Elementary School, Home of the Skyhawks! I am Angelo Benedetto, your new principal. I am honored and excited to be joining Sweetwater Springs Elementary as well as the La Mesa-Spring Valley family. Those of you whom I have already had the privilege of meeting have made me feel right at home.

We at Sweetwater Springs are student-centered and believe that we can guide each and every child to high levels of achievement and emotional well-being. The staff at Sweetwater Springs is preparing for an exciting 2020-2021 school year. Our work will be grounded in best practices that provide our students with a learning environment that is both safe and nurturing. We will continue our work with restorative practices and collaborating in Professional Learning Communities so that we may ensure that all of our students succeed.

At Sweetwater Springs, we are committed to:

  • Providing a rigorous curriculum aligned with essential content standards.
  • Setting high performance expectations for all of our students.
  • Assessing students throughout their learning.
  • Providing grade-level interventions when students are struggling with content.
  • Collaborating with colleagues, families, and students.

We recognize that in order to achieve success, it takes a strong partnership between our school and the families of our students. We have several opportunities for parents to get involved. The following are just a few committees that involve parents and/or community members: School Site Council, English Learner Advisory Committee, and Parent Teacher Student Association. Parents are also encouraged to volunteer in the classroom. Parent involvement is vital in the success of our students.

This year, you can expect to hear from me at least once a week via email and phone message as I send out a weekly Principal Bulletin. I look forward to meeting and working with each and every one of you.

SWS Reopening Letter

Ms. Salbato

2020-2021 Classified Employee of the Year at Sweetwater Springs

I am proud to recognize Ms. Salbato as the 2020-2021 Classified Employee of the Year at Sweetwater Springs. Ms. Salbato serves as our Library and Learning Resources Technician. She has been selected by her colleagues for her dedication to students and their families. Since schools closed last March, Ms. Salbato has had to adapt to several changes in her job. She has done so without skipping a beat. Ms. Salbato works with teachers and families to organize and facilitate the pick-up procedures for work packets, goody bags, and other resources. Her system is so precise that even in her absence, other staff can support the process of getting resources to the students. In order to meet with students during Distance Learning, Ms. Salbato has stopped into classroom Zooms to read and has recorded herself reading several books so that all students have frequent access to her readings. Above all, Ms. Salbato takes great pride in her work and her love for children is obvious to anyone that visits with her. We are fortunate to have Ms. Salbato at Sweetwater Springs.

Sweetwater P.R.O.U.D

The SWS staff has been working on rebuilding the schoolwide behavior intervention plan. We are taking a systematic approach to providing students and families with clear behavior expectations, positive reinforcement for expected behaviors, and a restorative approach to addressing behaviors. This plan started with the adoption of core values. I’m pleased to announce that we are Skyhawk P.R.O.U.D.!!! - Perseverance, Respect, Ownership, Unity, (self) Discipline). Thank you to all who voted for the core values. Stay tuned for more exciting news!

Mrs. Aguilar selected as the East County SELPA’s Community Advisory Committee (CAC) Service Award recipient.

Hello Sweetwater Springs,

I am thrilled to announce that our very own Mrs. Aguilahas been selected as the East County SELPA's Community Advisory Committee (CAC) Service Award recipient. Mrs. Aguilar has been selected to represent La Mesa-Spring Valley School District as our Awardee for the 2020-2021 school year. Mrs. Aguilar is being recognized for her extraordinary contributions to students with disabilities in multiple capacities. She serves as the School Psychologist here at Sweetwater Springs, and at the District level she supports students whose needs require the services provided by Non Public Schools.

Whether she is seeking funding through Donors Choose to create an outdoor sensory path, providing resources to help students and their families, or just calling home to check in on our students, one thing is perfectly clear: Mrs. Aguilar is an advocate for children.

Thank you, Mrs. Aguilar, for making Sweetwater Springs a great place to be. Congratulations!
